Library of Congress Subject Headings
(LCSH)

  • A subject heading is a word or phrase that is used to describe the subject content of a work.

  • Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) are books that provide lists of topics under which you can find materials in the library's catalog.

  • LCSH provides other terms, called cross-references, which can also be used to describe the topic.

  • LCSH is useful when attempting to narrow or broaden a topic. If you are finding too much, narrow your topic.  If you are finding too little, try a broader heading.

  • The key to abbreviations is inside the front cover of each volume.
